Chamomile and Rose Petal
The virtues of Chamomile for children and Childrens are many, for me it has to be the ultimate childhood herb. Even Peter Rabbit himself took Chamomile at bedtimes!
Chamomile is a marvellous relaxant for fussiness and sleeplessness, it is believed to relieve colic and works as an anti-inflammatory for teething pains. Its soothing properties may ease a headache too. For nap times, night times and cuddle up times Chamomiles virtues help cosiness and quiet to reign.
I made strong, single herbal infusions of chamomile, froze them in ice cube trays and allowed my little ones to suck on a cube I held through muslin when they had sore gums as babies.
Chamomile has a very dainty flower, similar to the daisy and has an apple like scent. It flowers June to October, enjoys the sunshine, sandy soil and makes a decorative addition to any garden. Pick the flowers for drying when they are fully open.
When I prepare a herbal tea, I choose the herbs for their virtues of course but I always include an extra herb I believe personal to the drinker. For my children I include a sprinkle of rose petals for their heavenly scent which is traditionally said to cheer the heart. It certainly does and coupled with Chamomile it soothes my little one Arann into the sweetest of slumbers, as it did his older sisters.
